Superchief Gallery
That's right, the MEGA ANNUAL GROUP SHOW is here at the Tri Lateral Superchief Empire respective headquarters, aka LA NYC and MIAMI! I am so stoked to have been down since 2013 and the movement moves on. I am showing a new but classic piece called Beautiful Future! Sumi Ink on Paper at the LA gallery. My whole life I have found deities, specifically Asian Religious deities and gods extremely fascinating. I have always had a spiritual and visionary connection, a feeling of power and universal energy when I see these epic characters in print or in person. The first experience I had in person was hilariously at a "Japanese" Steak House in Durham, NC as child. There were an assortment of buddhist statues, mainly sitting Buddhas and a set of Samurai Armor in the museumesque entrance way walking into the highly americanized corporate take on a Japanese experience. Nonetheless at the age of 6 I was astounded and completely transported to a surreal world of power, dynamism, energy, history, and feeling that I had before then not known.
In Taiwan and Singapore when I was 7, en route with my father's modern dance company Pilobolus at the time, I first time was able to see real larger than life statues of the buddha, of deities, of creatures from Asian folklore, of dragons, of tiger, fish, even the famous lion headed fish in Singapore. My mind swirled and I felt compelled to discover more.
Deities have played a major role in the evolution of my figurative abstraction works over time. Creating creatures larger than life and beyond human comprehension that eventually overtake the world that we live in under the illusion that we human's actually control any of it. Raijin and Fujin are two of my favorites that I continue to investigate in my personal work. My trips to Japan have really continued to compel me to connect with these two major figures of Japanese Mythology and Religious Iconography and I continue on to immerse myself deeper and learn more about this aspect of culture. I have to stop writing at this moment to continue on my day, but let this passage be an intro to an ongoing investigation into seeking the power of these deities and finding my own interpretations of them into my own work, mythology, and practice.

Time has been flying by. I have some major announcements to make. First off, Andrew Kline and I have been working on a massive new show to debut at Superchief Gallery LA on November 12th, 2016. We have been working hard to bring you an immersive art, sound, and installation experience taking you through a future world where samples and visual reference from today have become the foundation of a society in the world of Unstoppable Tomorrow. It is also a conceptual exploration of shared reference creating a unifying but also very singular experience.

Yes the moment has come and the time is nigh. Come lose your mind with us at the opening of my newest solo exhibition... "Excorrigia / The Scourge" premiering at Superchief Gallery (@Culturefix, 9 Clinton Street at Houston, in New York City's Lower East Side). The opening, hosted by myself, Carolyn LeBourgeois (who made the cross country trek with me) the whole crew from Sueprchief, Ed Zipco, Billy, and Tricky Yooth aka Patrick, as well as the owners of Culturefix and their rad gallery manager Josh Allen, will commence at 6pm and go until 10pm, Thursday, April 3rd 2014. 
The work is hung and I am so proud of this one. The works themselves are ready to be experienced as a full on visual narrative following The Scourge in the world of Unstoppable Tomorrow, individually to be felt and walked around inside of with the eyes and minds of the audience, and they are very ready to find homes here in NYC and beyond. 
Also Joel St. Julien, one of my family from the Bay Area, has helped me co produce a sound piece of intensely demonic and frightening soundscapes and textures that will no doubt bring the whole thing together, finished by a (human) sacrificial altar piece installation in the 2nd floor street window of the gallery space. Needless to say, I feel really good about this one and cannot wait to see what kind of response we get! See you there! 
I am happily getting ready for three major happenings in my life right now. All are art exhibitions. First I will be a part of the BRIC Arts "Art Into Music" Exhibition in Brooklyn, NY opening February 19th. I will scavenging and materials and building a site specific installation in the exhibition space at the new museum complex that will incorporate a stage for performances and listening stations to listen to each of the contributing artists play lists that inspire them. Mega Cool!
Then its back to Oakland for three weeks as I prepare for my cross country trip to NYC and my solo exhibition Excorrigia / The Scourge at Superchief Gallery opening on April 3rd.

And then finally it is back to the Bay once again to finish up the Shooting Gallery solo Pilgrimage which I am happy to now announce will also mark the beginning of a new partnership with the amazing Paxton Gate. A number of pieces will feature bones and items sourced from Paxton Gate to help to realize the vision of Pilgrimage and continue to a partnership will into the future!!! This is going to be an amazing year!
See Through the Sun : Mixed Media on Found Object : 2014
With two solo shows in back to back months, April and May, between NYC and SF I have my work cut out for me right now. And I happily accept the challenge. The show in New York in April at Superchief will investigate and concern itself more with the actual Astroknots that wreaked havoc amongst our society around the year 2120 and the subsequent show in May at Shooting Gallery, Pilgrimage, will illustrate and engage the tribe in the post reset world I have been following with each show as they move onto to "greener pastures" and forward as survivors in this new chaotic world. I am psyched to say the least.

These two shows mark a massive milestone for me as one of them bookends the beginning of the saga and personifies and explores the actual creatures of destruction and their tumultuos effect on the people, places and things that were in their path as they rolled and throttled their ways across the landscape of earth. These creatures very much mimic much of what I see as the environmental and economic implications of what humanity has done to the world and its effect on the fragile society that has been erected to this point.

And then Pilgrimage suddenly takes the ongoing story of the same group of survivors I have been utilizing since Unstoppable Tomorrow Vol. 1 at Old Crow in 2010, to a new and massively developmental phase of their existence. This can be seen through a lot of new experimentation with my pieces, new color palettes, a lot of simplification in placement and effect, and the rebirth of found object pieces that are meant to feel like actual archaeological remnants from this tribe that will lead into the central interactive prayer installation. The narrative "graphic Novel" element that the audience will be surrounded by will be a mixture of new colors, new ways of signifying different entities, emotions, happenings, and growth. There will be very literal story telling narrative portraiture, found object relics, very abstract and non representational pieces that give off far more feeling and emotion than literal, figurative works can, and more... and a whole new abstract sound epic inside of the installation (which will this time be housed inside of a structure as of now, this may change). Oh, there will also be some "Triangle Magic" within the exhibition...

...making a ton of new work as Littlefield prepares for my Triangle Magic solo show October 4th, and I continue to make work for my Superchief Gallery Solo Show in April! I am really enjoying what is coming together and I spent a gung ho weekend in the studio making new abstract panels ready for line work...here are the finished pieces thus far and some studio shots! The brainscapes have been up and down, smiles and frowns, and like all things worthwhile, I find myself going from intense anxiety to calm acceptance and enjoyment of the moment as well as reflection on the steps of creating that have been explored. This sort of ebb and flow of mental and emotional states really has always shown me how work is involved in a multi dimensional, truly human conversation with myself, the world, and despite moments of fear and anxiousness the work always is a breath of fresh air as it nears completion and the resolution is felt within. Each piece is a life and exhibits growth in and of itself and I love that about art making.
So I haven't updated since July 4th weekend. A lot has occurred since. I am going to be in New York City on October 1st to do a show at one of my favorite places to show art, Littlefield NYC in Brooklyn's Gowanus neighborhood. The show will be called Traingle Magic and the opening is either going to be October 3rd or 4th...more concrete info coming next week with a press release. This will be my second show at Littlefield and I am incredibly happy that asked me back, especially since they asked me to be their representative artist for the Gowanus Open Studios weekend October 18th - 20th.
In other New York City news, I will be doing a Solo Show at the awesome Superchief Gallery in the Lower East Side in April, 2014! I am incredibly stoked about this and it will be a full on Unstoppable Tomorrow ragefest, bloodbath, Astroknot filled rad time! Okay so maybe not literally a bloodbath (or might be??? who knows), but getting to show at Superchief (who just did the Vice Magazine Photo Show which to me is a rather big deal and they showed one of my favorite artist homies who I respect a immensely Coby Kennedy recently) is pretty damn awesome to me! These guys show crazy, cutting edge, left field, fun, no holds barred, weird art that I really, really dig, so being part of it all is a blessing to me! Because of this and Littlefield I suddenly had a huge energetic rebirth into my studio and have been painting my ass of literally. Here are some studio images. Oh and SFMOMA is still running too...that makes me happy as hell!
I made it back in one piece (physically, emotionally, mentally) from Minneapolis as I was there for a month for work. I have more to post that will come soon, I have been very busy since I got back. Also I have been selling some older work to some great people and that always keeps the train moving down the track. So all in all things are great, and here are some photos to prove how epic the time in the studio has been! See you again soon!
